Cusseta - Chattahoochee
County
Named for the river comprising its western border,
Chattahoochee County lies just below Columbus-Muscogee County. Also a
unified government, Cusseta-Chattahoochee County is the home of Fort Benning,
the world's largest infantry camp. Containing some 184,000 acres, the
base is known as the "Home of the Infantry" and has provided training
continuously since its beginning as a temporary camp on the outskirts of
Columbus in 1918. Fort Benning covers approximately two-thirds of the
county. Points of interest in the community include
Riverbend Park,
on the river in the southwestern corner of the county, and the
old jail in Cusseta, built in
1902 and undergoing restoration. Click on the map to the left to explore
