Clay County
Clay County is home to historic Fort Gaines and the
Walter F. George Lock and Dam, creating Lake Walter F. George just north of
the city. Fort Gaines, on the Chattahoochee River, dates to 1814 and
is the oldest surviving settlement in west Georgia. The town grew up
around a frontier fort, and the city's historic district and Frontier
Village museum evoke the interesting history of the area. The county
is also home to George T. Bagby State Park on the lake and the nearby
