Fort Gaines-Clay County

Economic Development Council

Clay County

Clay County is home to historic Fort Gaines and the Walter F. George Lock and Dam, creating Lake Walter F. George just north of the city.  Fort Gaines, on the Chattahoochee River, dates to 1814 and is the oldest surviving settlement in west Georgia.  The town grew up around a frontier fort, and the city's historic district and Frontier Village museum evoke the interesting history of the area.  The county is also home to George T. Bagby State Park on the lake and the nearby Meadowlinks Golf Course.  Click on the map to the left to explore cycling and pedestrian facilities and points of interest in Fort Gaines and Clay County.
